Infantry and Mounted Divisions of WW1

 

Australian infantry forces at Gallipoli in 1914-1915 were initially: 1st Division
and 4th Brigade fought as part of the Anzac Division

 

The Anzac Division consisted of the 4th Bde, New Zealand Brigade and some

Light Horse Regiments

 

The 2nd Division was formed in August 1915 and arrived at Gallipoli from late August to early September. After Gallipoli the Anzac Division was disbanded. The New Zealand formed their own Division. The Light Horse stayed in the Middle East and the 4th Bde became part of the 4th Division.

 

The 3rd Division was being formed in Australia towards the end of the Gallipoli campaign and thus consisted of totally raw troops, but were very well trained by the time they first saw heavy fighting at Messines in June 1917.

 

The 4th Division and 5th Division consisted of raw troops when they were formed. It was decided that each of the seasoned battalions in the 1st Division and
4th Bde would be halved and transferred to the 4th and 5th Division so to provide

 

A 6th Division was in the process of being formed in England in 1917 but the horrific casualties at 3rd Ypres (Passchendale) caused its disbandment

 

Anzac Mounted Division was formed in March 1916 included was the
1st Light Horse Brigade, 2nd Light Horse Brigade, 3rd Light Horse Brigade

 

Australian Mounted Division was formed in February 1917 and fought as the Imperial Mounted Division. The 3rd light Horse Brigade was taken from the Anzac Mounted Division the 4th Light Horse Brigade was also added. In Aug 1917 renamed
Australian Mounted Division. The 5th Light Horse Brigade joined in July 1918.
